Bodegas Santo Tomas
Bodegas Santo Tomas was the first winery to be established in Baja California. Its original vines were planted in 1791 by Dominican Friars at the Misión de Santo Tomás de Aquino and the wine they produced was used for religious purposes. In 1888 it converted to a full-time commercial winery and was named Bodegas Santo Tomas in honor of the original Mission. Over 200 years later, Bodegas Santo Tomas is still ahead of the curve - it was the first Mexican Winery to select a woman to be head winemaker. Laura Zamora has won over 220 medals in international competition since she took over in 2005. Interestingly, Bodegas Santo Tomas is not located in the Valle de Guadalupe like so many other Baja wineries. Instead, it is actually located in the Valle de Santo Tomás at the site of the original Misión approximately 40 miles south of the Valle de Guadalupe. This valley has a slightly cooler climate than its northern neighbor, allowing the grapes to slowly ripen over the course of a long growing season. Now one of Mexico’s largest wineries, Bodegas Santo Tomas produces approximately 125,000 cases of wine per year across 40 different labels.
