Monte Xanic
Monte Xanic is one of the most prestigious wineries in Mexico. Founded in 1987, the mission of the winery has always been to create the greatest wine possible, regardless of the cost. Originally founded as a small winery that produced 6,200 cases in its first vintage, Monte Xanic has now grown into one of the largest wineries in Mexico with a production of over 100,000 cases per year. It is located on the northern edge of the Valle de Guadalupe and sits on a bed of granite that leads to crisp, clean white wines and bold, hearty reds. Founding winemaker Hans Backoff revolutionized winemaking in Mexico. Prior to the 1980s, Mexican Wine had a reputation for being mass produced and extremely soft. When Mexico opened itself up to international imports, the local wine industry was devastated, with many wineries shutting down nearly overnight. It was at this time that 5 families got together and founded Monte Xanic and immediately invested in the reputation of Mexican Wine. In the 30 years from 1987 until his death in 2017, Hans Backoff’s wines won over 260 medals in international competition and his wines are featured on such esteemed wine lists as The French Laundry in Napa Valley and Grill 23 in Boston. As Baja California has struggled with drought in recent years, Monte Xanic has invested in a desalination plant to ensure it has enough clean water for its vines. It is truly the perfect example of the winery wanting to produce the best wine possible, regardless of the cost.
