Tierra Adentro

With its first vintage in 2010, Tierra Adentro is the crown jewel of Campo Real Vinícola, a project over 40 years in the making. When the López family first planted grapes in Troncoso, Zacatecas, they worked only as farmers and sold their grapes to other wineries. Over time, as the vines matured and began producing more concentrated juice, the family decided to make their own wine - Tierra Adentro. Tierra Adentro calls itself “El Vino Mexicano de Altura” - The Mexican Wine of Altitude. This is because its 40 hectares of vineyards are planted at over 7,500 feet above sea level! This is an extreme climate to grow wine. Zacatecas is the only state in Mexico without a major river, and the area regularly receives less than 12 inches of rain in a full year. The high elevation leads to great diurnal shifts in temperature, and all vines are covered in protective netting to prevent hail damage. It is also one of the very few wineries in Mexico that must worry about frost damage, as temperatures in the winter can drop as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Being located around the 22nd parallel, this high elevation serves to cool the vines and allow the grapes to reach full maturity. The result is one of the most highly regarded wines in Mexico.
